Waiting for a Better Time?

Wall-mounted metal rods and bars arranged on orange hooks.

We’re coming into holiday season, so a lot of folks think this is a bad time to start a new exercise program and they should instead wait until the new year. As a gym owner, I’m obviously biased, but I think a lot of folks do great to strike while the iron is hot and if you’re feeling motivated to start now, do as Nike says. Delaying can lead to your motivation fizzling out. We’ve talked about motivation in the past (here and here) and motivation can be fleeting!

We have a couple who started with us around this time last year and they’ve both been doing amazing. They’ve now made it through a whole year, training through travel, working around pain and illness, and all the other ups and downs that come in a year. Sometimes people think that a calmer, easier time is right around the corner, but the reality is that life just keeps on happening! There’s nothing that special about January.

Motivation Is a Wave, Ride It When It Comes

When motivation hits, it’s worth listening. That spark of energy that makes you think, “I’m ready to do something for myself” doesn’t come around every day. Waiting for a “better” time often means waiting until that feeling fades away completely. The truth is, action creates momentum, not the other way around. If you start now, even with small, manageable steps, you’ll start building consistency and confidence that carry you forward long after the initial excitement fades.

You’ll Be Ahead of the January Rush

Every year, gyms get flooded in January with folks who are trying to get a fresh start. That energy can be great, but it can also feel overwhelming if you’re new. Starting now means you get a head start. You’ll have time to learn the ropes, find your rhythm, and get comfortable in your routine before the crowds hit. When everyone else is just getting started, you’ll already have a month or two of experience under your belt and will feel more at home in your training space.

Real Life Doesn’t Pause for Fitness

One of the biggest myths about starting a new habit is that you need the “perfect” time. But perfect doesn’t exist. The holidays, travel, work, family time are part of real life, and learning how to fit your training around it is the whole point. The couple I mentioned earlier made it through every season because they learned to adapt, not because life got easier. Starting now teaches you to be flexible, to show up when it’s inconvenient, and to keep going even when the schedule isn’t ideal. That’s the kind of consistency that actually sticks.

So if you’re feeling that spark right now, don’t wait for January. Start small, start messy, but start now. You’ll thank yourself in a few months when you’re already in motion, while everyone else is just trying to find their footing.
