I’m Not Interested in a “New” You

It’s that time of year again… The time when our newsfeeds are taken over by ads for “life-changing” products and fitness programs, diets and supplements, and even prescription drugs or surgical procedures. We suddenly find ourselves riddled with undue guilt, comparison stress, pressure to drastically change our bodies and habits, and urges to set lofty goals of “total transformation” for the year ahead.

It’s a new year, and you’re supposed to want a “new” you. A “changed” you. But I don’t want you to change. I want you to grow.

It’s time to reframe the narrative of “New Year, New You” and take this moment to proclaim this year as the “Year of You.” I know it sounds corny, but I’m serious.

How might your year be different if you fixate less on what you want to change about your life, your body, or your habits? What if you resolve to compare yourself to others less and practice temporal comparison more — hitting pause to reflect on just how much you’ve grown and achieved compared to the you of 5 years ago?

What if rather than hurtling towards a goal that you hope will bring you happiness, you set goals informed by the happy moments you want to experience between the manufactured milestones on the calendar?

How about if you strive to discover new strengths, build on your current ones, and practice self-compassion along the way?

Because, spoiler alert: filling our time with activities or diets that stem from a negative self-belief in the name of being a “new” someone we think we’re supposed to be doesn’t lead to a happy – or balanced – life.

Maybe the real transformation of 2023 comes not from reinventing yourself, but from embracing everything you already are.

I don’t need or want a “new” you. I want a “grown” you. A you that has learned intriguing things, tried interesting experiences, and met enriching people. A you that is more knowledgeable, empowered, and confident. But you should still be YOU.
