I talk to a lot of people who say they need motivation to work out. The Insta gurus will tell you motivation comes and goes, and discipline is the key instead. I want to focus on something even more sustainable: habit.
Once movement becomes a habit, you don’t need to rely on motivation or discipline, because moving your body is just something you do. Motivation might spark the beginning. Discipline keeps it going at first. But habit is what makes it stick.
So how do you actually build that habit?
1. Schedule It
The simplest place to start is your calendar. Schedule your workouts like appointments. Maybe you do this by blocking off time, signing up for a class, or booking a session with your coach. Ideally, keep a consistent weekly schedule to take the decision-making out of it. But if your life doesn’t allow for that (hi, real humans), look ahead on Sunday and map out your week.
2. Have a Plan
Know what you’re going to do once you show up. If you don’t have to think or make decisions, it’s a lot easier to follow through. Whether you’re following a program, working with a coach, or just running through a saved workout, the more you remove friction, the more likely you are to get it done.
3. Slipping? Remember Why You Started
Maybe you had the schedule, you had the plan. And still… half your workouts didn’t happen. It’s okay, life happens. When your routine starts to slip, take a second to reflect. Why did you start? What were you feeling back then? What did you want? How far have you come?
Your original “why” might still be enough to pull you forward, or it might be time to redefine your goals.
4. Keep It Fresh
Sometimes the issue isn’t motivation, it’s boredom. One of our members recently told me he was showing up, but not really enjoying his sessions. We made a small change to his program, and that little spark of novelty made all the difference.
If you’re working with a coach, speak up. A fresh twist might be exactly what you need.
If you’re one of our members, you can schedule a goal review session any time you want to, and we’ll check in on your progress and make sure that you’re on the right track! If you’re not a member of ours yet and want to chat about how we can help you, book a free no sweat intro. It’s a short chat with a coach to see how we can help you reach your fitness goals. We can support you in developing a movement habit that sticks for a long time!
